The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) is the youngest public institution for higher education and scientific research in the Lisbon metropolitan area. It was founded in 1973, within a framework of expansion and diversification in Portuguese higher education.
The university has over 14000 students, 1500 teachers and 800 employees and is located on three separate campuses, consisting of five Faculties, three Institutes and one School. A wide variety of courses is offered in all areas of knowledge.
It is the only University in Lisbon with a wide range of faculties/schools and institutes, with three institutions related to human health: Medical School, National School of Public Health and Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Besides Medical Sciences, other areas of knowledge range from Law (strong focus on the doctorate programme), Economics and Management, Social Sciences and Humanities (highly focused on communication) to Science and Technology (focus on Engineering) and a specialised research oriented institute focused on Chemistry, Biology and Technology with a strong commitment towards applied biological sciences.
UNL hosts 49 research centers, which run cooperative projects with numerous institutions, businesses and universities at national and international levels and also exchange programs, such as the Socrates/Erasmus programmes. Other recently established top international collaborations are exemplified by the PhD programmes in collaboration with MIT in Bioengineering and the agreements with Carnegie-Mellon (Mathematics and Computer science) and University of Texas at Austin (Computer science).
The Faculty of Economics and Management has been granted EQUIS international accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development.
In 2007, UNL was the second University in Portugal with the highest ratio, 97.5%, between application and intake of students in the first application period in October.
The quality of teaching, now stimulated by the success of the application of the Bologna declaration to all our courses from the 1st and 2nd cycle, as well as an increasing number of 3rd cycle proposals, show the capacity of UNL to present itself as an European higher education institution.
