The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano was born in 1997 with a very clear mission: to offer an internationally oriented education, European exchange programmes, multilingual study opportunities, opportunities to acquire both professional skills and theoretical knowledge and an international teaching staff. The University is also committed to unite research and teaching in the best possible way.The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano comprises the School of Economics and Management, the Faculties of Computer Science, Design and Art, Education and of Technology and Natural Sciences.

One lecturer for every 6 students

State-of-the-art equipment, a lecturer-student ration of 1:6, an international academic staff – these are some of the features that make the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano different. Two thirds of our students finish the University within the time foreseen. The size of the University and the close working relationships that are forged between students and academic staff contribute to the high level of academic excellence and this is one of the reasons why we restrict our student intake each year.

The importance of languages

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano has always promoted its multilingualism. We are convinced that graduates with good language competence will have a huge advantage over the competition when searching for work and that is why most of our courses are trilingual. The Language Centre therefore plays a crucial role in our students’ lives. Students are encouraged to use its multimedia lab and audiovisual facilities, which include a variety of material for language study. The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano acts also as a magnet for many international students, and this international atmosphere allows for daily language practice. Our Centre for Language Studies is a research centre that investigates language and communication issues. “We’re proud to have developed the first stage of a university system that’s already appreciated all over Europe: an academic setting for European citizens”, says Prof. Rita Franceschini, Rector of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.

International

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano encourages and supports study periods abroad because we believe an experience of this kind is as beneficial academically as it is personally. We have built up a network with many renowned institutions where students and academic staff can enjoy all the advantages that international exchange programmes afford.

Research

Teaching and research are inseparable; due to research our teaching remains at the cutting edge of higher education. Research at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano has an interdisciplinary approach that is of social as well as academic utility. Those who make up the University’s community decide in which fields they want to achieve excellence. However, a special regard is reserved for incentives to improve scientific growth.
