University of Helsinki
Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is now one of the leading European research-intensive universities and a founding member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). The university is internationally renowned for its high quality in teaching, research and innovation. In 2008, it was ranked 68th in the world by the Shanghai JiaoTong University.
With over 3 500 members of research and teaching staff and 38 000 students, the University of Helsinki has a multidisciplinary and inspiring study environment. It houses world-class facilities, including modern libraries, laboratories and computer environments. In addition to the International Master’s Degree Programmes, a number of Master’s Degrees and all Ph.D. programmes can be completed in English.
Top research across a broad front
During 2005, a total of 148 international experts evaluated all the units of the university engaged in research. The reviewed period covered all research from 1999 to 2004 and comprised a total of 24 000 researcher person-years. During this period researchers produced more than 60 000 publications.
These peer reviews indicate research to be of even higher quality than in the first evaluation in 1999. On a scale of 1 to 7, nearly two thirds of the 75 units engaged in research received the highest or second-highest grade.
International university
The university has strong international connections. It has more than 100 cooperation agreements with universities on different continents. The university’s researchers are in great demand as experts in international scientific communities, meetings and publications.
The University participates in many exchange programmes like the University Bilateral Agreements, EU programmes (Erasmus, Tempus, Leonardo, Alfa etc.), Nordplus, ISEP, AEN and MAUI exchanges and takes part in several research programmes.
Experts in all disciplines from the University of Helsinki, are the best and most eloquent testimony to the University’s prowess. The University of Helsinki is the alma mater of seven of Finland’s eleven presidents, Jorma Ollila, former CEO of Nokia, and Linus Torvalds, the brain behind the Linux operating system, for example.
